Who were the Titans?
The Titans were the Immortals and descendents of the primeval deities who were born out of Chaos. The first 12 Titans (the First Generation of Titans) were a race of powerful, giant gods from the union of the primordial deities Gaia and Uranus, who they had overthrown. The next generation of Titans were the Olympian gods who, led by Zeus, defeated the Titans in the Battle of the Gods (called the Titanomachy). As Immortals the Titans could not be killed so they were imprisoned by Zeus in Tartarus, the abyss of torment and suffering, located beneath the Underworld.

The Second Generation of Titans
The male Titans joined with one of their sisters (the Titanides) to produce children. The second generation of Titans consisted of:

  • The children of Hyperion: Eos, Helios, and Selene
  • The children of Coeus: Leto and Asteria
  • The children of Iapetus: Atlas, Prometheus, Epimetheus, and Menoetius
  • The children of Oceanus: Potamoi and the Oceanides
  • The children of Crius: Astraeus, Pallas, and Perses
  • The children of Cronus: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon and Zeus (who became known as the Olympian gods)

Names of the First Titans: Genealogy, Definition, Role and Function
Cronus & Rhea: Cronus was the god of time and the ages and the youngest son of Gaia and Uranus and Titan ruler. He married his sister Rhea. Rhea was the daughter of Gaia and Uranus and one of the Titanides. Their children were Demeter, Hestia, Hera, Hades, Poseidon and Zeus. Cronus who was de-throned by his son Zeus in the Titanomachy.

Coeus & Phoebe: Coeus was a son of Gaia and Uranus, the Titan god of Intelligence. He was the husband of Phoebe. Their children were Leto and Asteria. They were the grandparents of Apollo and Artemis

Oceanus & Tethys: Oceanus the Titan lord of the ocean and the eldest son of Gaia and Uranus who married his sister Tethys. Their children were the Oceanides (three thousand daughters) and the Potamoi (three thousand sons)

Iapetus & Clymene: Iapetus was the Titan god of mortal life. He married Clymene, one of the Oceanides (daughters of Tethys and Oceanus). The names of their children were Menoetius, Atlas, Epimetheus and Prometheus.

Hyperion & Theia: Hyperion was the lord of light, brother of Cronus and the Titan of the east. He married Theia, his wife and sister. Their children were Helios, Eos and Selene. Meaning of his name "he who goes before the sun."

Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne was the goddess of memory and the inventor of words, a daughter of Gaia and Uranus and the mother of the nine Muses by Zeus

Crius: Crius was the god of the constellations, a son of Uranus and Gaia. His consort was Eurybia, daughter of Gaia and Pontus. Children: Astraeus, Pallas and Perses

Themis: Themis was the goddess of justice and order. One of the six daughters of Gaia and Uranus, she was the lover of Zeus. Children: the Horae and the Fates

NAMES: Genealogy, Definition, Role and Function
Atlas: Atlas was the god of endurance and the son of the Titan Iapetus and Clymene one of Oceanides. His brothers were Epimetheus and Prometheus. He was punished by Zeus for his part in the War of the Titans and condemned to bear the heavens upon his shoulders.

Prometheus: Prometheus was the Titan god of forethought and the son of the Titan Iapetus and Clymene one of Oceanides. His brothers were Epimetheus and Atlas. He stole fire from Olympus and gave it to mankind; Zeus punished him by chaining him to a rock where an eagle gnawed at his liver until Hercules rescued him.

Epimetheus: Epimetheus was was the Titan god of afterthought and the son of Iapetus and Clymene. His brothers were Atlas and Prometheus. Despite Prometheus's warning against gifts from Zeus he accepted Pandora as his wife and she unleashed all the troubles of the world.

Menoetius: Menoetius was the son of Iapetus and Clymene. He was the dark titan god of violent anger and rash action, who was wounded by Zeus with a flash of lightning, in the War of the Titans. Menoetius was subsequently banished to Tartarus.

Perses: Perses was the son of Crius and Eurybia and the Titan god of destruction. He was the father of Hecate by the goddess Asteria

Pallas: Pallas was the son of Crius and Eurybia, the Titan god of warcraft. He was married to Styx, by whom he became the father of Zelus, Nike, Cratus, and Bia. Pallas: Opposed his grandniece Athena in the Battle of the Giants.

Astraeus: Astraeus was the son of Crius and Eurybia he was an astrological deity and the Titan god of the dusk, when the stars appear. Astraeus married Eos, goddess of the dawn.

Helios: Helios was the son of Hyperion & Theia and the Titan god of the sun. He was the father of the Charites, Phaeton, Pasiphae, Aeetes, Circe, the Heliadae and the Heliades

Eos: Eos was the daughter of Hyperion & Theia and the Titan goddess of the dawn. She married Astraeus the god of dusk.

Selene: Selene was the daughter of Hyperion & Theia and the Titan goddess of the moon

Leto: Leto was the daughter of Coeus and Phoebe and the Titan goddess of motherhood and modesty. Her union with Zeus produced her twins, Apollo and Artemis, the Letoides

Asteria: Asteria was the daughter of Coeus and Phoebe and the Titan goddess of nocturnal oracles and falling stars. Her union with Perses produced Hecate, the goddess of magic, witchcraft, spectres

The Oceanides: The Oceanides were the 3000 daughters of Oceanus and Tethys who were goddesses and water nymphs.

The Potamoi: The Potamoi were the three thousand sons of Oceanus and Tethys who were river-gods

Hestia: Hestia was a daughter of the Titans, Cronus and Rhea. She was the Virgin goddess of the hearth, home and cooking. The sister of Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hera and Demeter.

Hades: Hades was a son of the Titans, Cronus and Rhea. He was the god of the Underworld and the dead.

Poseidon: Poseidon was a son of the Titans, Cronus and Rhea. He was the god of the sea, rivers, and earthquakes.

Zeus: Zeus was a son of Cronus and Rhea. He was the king of the gods and god of the heavens. He married his sister Hera and together they had three children: Ares, Hebe and Hephaestus.

Hera: Hera was a daughter of the Titans, Cronus and Rhea. She married her brother Zeus and became Queen of the gods. She and Zeus had three children: Ares, Hebe and Hephaestus.

Demeter: Demeter was a daughter of the Titans, Cronus and Rhea. She was goddess of agriculture, and the harvest. Demeter was the sister and lover of Zeus they had a daughter named Persephone, the goddess of the underworld.
